American Forests
American Forests joined the NIACS partnership in 2017. American Forests is a leader among the forest management and conservation community in the United States, frequently partnering with the Forest Service and other agencies to deliver high-impact work across rural and urban forests. American Forests has a Resilient Forests program that focuses on restoring large forests in natural landscapes and a Tree Equity Program that addresses forestry needs in low-income neighborhoods and neighborhoods of color.
American Forests Engagement in NIACS
- American Forests and fellow NIACS partner NCASI have collaborated on seven large-scale soil carbon analyses for forested regions in the US. The most recent assessment, Effects of Forest Management and Land Use Change on Soil Carbon in the US Gulf Coastal Plain, was published in 2026.
- In 2021, American Forests, NIACS, and several partners developed a menu of actions that provide benefits for human health, climate adaptation, and carbon mitigation in urban forests.
- American Forests has supported NIACS in developing climate change vulnerability assessments for urban forests in several large metropolitan areas, including Boston, Indianapolis and Detroit. The Indianapolis and Boston assessments are featured on American Forests Vibrant Cities Lab.
- American Forests and NIACS collaborated on three “Learning Labs” to help states address their commitments related to Natural and Working Lands under the U.S. Climate Alliance.
- American Forests helped develop the NIACS Adaptation Menu for Forest Carbon Management.
