Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission
The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) joined the NIACS partnership in 2017. GLIFWC represents the off-reservation treaty rights of eleven Ojibwe tribes in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Mighigan who reserved hunting, fishing, and gathering rights in treaties with the United States government. GLIFWC provides a variety of services related to natural resource management expertise, conservation enforcement, legal and policy analysis, and public information. The GLIFWC Climate Change Program helps define the extent and severity of climate change impacts across the Ceded Territories to assist member tribes in co-managing treaty resources.
GLIFWC Engagement in NIACS
- GLIFWC, NIACS, and several other partners worked together to publish Dibaginjigaadeg Anishinaabe Ezhitwaad - A Tribal Climate Adaptation Menu in 2019.
- GLIFWC and NIACS collaborate on convening workshops with tribal natural resources staff, tribal community members, and Forest Service staff to develop climate adaptation projects. In 2022 and 2023, GLIFWC helped lead a webinar series and three workshops between tribes and National Forests to identify mutual climate adaptation priorities and develop projects to be implemented through the Tribal Forest Protection Act.
- GLIFWC staff have participated in the development of several NIACS adaptation menus and contributed to NIACS workshops and trainings.
- NIACS team members assisted with layout, design, and technical review of the GLIFWC Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment, Aanji bimaadiziimagak o’ow aki.
