Michigan State University
Michigan State University (MSU) joined the NIACS partnership in 2021. The MSU Department of Forestry, within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, trains undergraduate and graduate students and conducts innovative research on sustainable forestry. The MSU Forest Carbon and Climate Program is focused on increasing understanding and implementation of climate-smart forest management, through formal and informal education, research, and collaboration. MSU Extension Forestry programs help landowners, educators, and professionals become effective stewards of the state’s forests.
MSU Engagement in NIACS
- MSU FCCP and NIACS staff have collaborated on the development of online professional development courses related to urban forestry, wildfire, and regional carbon and climate trends. Future collaborations may include modules for a Michigan Master Woodland Owner course.
- MSU Extension has invited NIACS to contribute to trainings for high school instructors, the Michigan Forest Association, and loggers.
- In 2023 and 2024, NIACS worked with the MSU Forest Carbon and Climate Program to deliver a series of webinars to support state and tribal agencies working on forest carbon management. These webinars are available online.
- NIACS staff delivered a webinar on Forest Carbon Stewardship as a part of the MSU FCCP Learning Exchange Series, organized in partnership with the Society of American Foresters.
