Michigan Technological University (MTU) was a founding member of the NIACS partnership in 2003. The MTU College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science has degree programs and research interests in forestry, wildlife ecology and management, environmental science, biotechnology and molecular genetics, forest biomaterials, and geospatial technology. More than 5,000 acres of university forests are available for research, education, recreation, and outreach.

MTU Engagement in NIACS 

  • Six NIACS team members are employed through MTU, supporting a wide array of projects related to climate adaptation training and outreach, watershed stewardship, online communication and science delivery, forest carbon management, and web product development. 
  • MTU researchers engage NIACS on climate-related research, such as the silviculture for northern hardwoods at the Ford Center and Forest and assisted migration potential for pine species.  
  • NIACS team members at MTU delivered climate adaptation and carbon stewardship training to a wide variety of audiences in 2024, including National Forest staff, Land Trust Alliance members, SFI-certified loggers, and Michigan DNR wildlife managers. 
  • NIACS Research Professors Luke Nave and Adrienne Keller produced multiple peer-reviewed articles, including a meta-analysis of land-use change and forest management effects on soil carbon stocks in the Northeast US and a series of primers on ecosystem carbon topics
